We decided to try out two different storage options - one concentrating on capacity, the other on speed. Boosting available hard drive space is now easy and virtually any kind of storage can be attached - but the question is, what's the best way to use this feature?

Once the router has passed the address on to the PS4, it stores it in its own cache which will be much bigger than your device cache. With the recent arrival of system software 4.5, PlayStation 4 finally possesses a 'must have' feature that has proved invaluable on Xbox One - full support for plug-in external storage, hooked up via USB. If it doesn't have an entry it queries the DNS server configured in its internet settings. So you try to browse to website X and the PS4 cache does not have an entry for it, so it queries it's DNS server (the router), if that has an entry for site X, it returns the IP address. The PS4 probably has some kind of DNS cache in it, it will most likely not be very big & clears out old entries to make cash for new ones, it might also flush old entries when they exceed a time out value & clear everything when turned off. Just to give an example, I downloaded Just Cause 3 (the FREE PS Plus game this month) in just 2 hours (40-50GB game). Note: OpenDNS and GoogleDNS were NOT the fastest for me, personally.Īfter I set this up, my download test on PS4 remained the same - however - I started downloading at 50Mbp/s - 60Mbp/s! Once you get the Primary/Secondary DNS server from this search, simply go onto your PS4 network settings -> Custom -> Connect to your Wi-Fi -> select automatic / none on everything except DNS Servers, select 'Manual', and enter the Primary/Secondary DNS servers there.

If you go onto your laptop/PC and Google "Best DNS Servers for me" there are plenty of free software out there that does a big search and finds the fastest DNS Server in your area. Without getting too technical, your PS4 might be downloading something slower then you can achieve purely because the DNS Server you are connected to is currently quite busy. This is where I fully learned about 'DNS Servers'. However, when something downloaded, it felt more like 10Mbp/s - 15Mbp/s. I currently get 'up to' 76Mbp/s on my current package, with my PlayStation 4 being upstairs it would show a download speed of anywhere between 20Mbp/s - 30 Mbp/s. This is a awesome trick I learned recently, and I didn't think it would actually work!
